In Mark 4:35-41 through to chapter 5, there is an interesting story with many lessons, but we would focus on one crucial take-away. In the story, we are told, that day, when evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” So, leaving the crowd behind, Jesus entered the boat with His disciples en route to the other side. But along the journey, when He was asleep, there was a strong wind that caused the waves to break over the boat, such that it was nearly swamped. The disciples woke Jesus and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” So Jesus got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” Then they were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

They continued their journey to the other side where we are told in Mark 5 that, there was this demon possessed man who lived in the cemetery among the tombs who was always cutting himself with stones and screaming.

Jesus went straight to where this man was, and cast the demons out of him and he was instantly normal (see Mark 5:15).

As earlier indicated, there are many lessons in this story but I will focus on how caring Jesus is, in reaching out to save us in our helpless situations, even at the peril of His life. Jesus decided to cross to the other side because He was aware of the sad situation of the demon possessed man and wanted to save him. The devil, being aware of the mission of Jesus, attempted to drown the boat so the mission won’t be accomplished. But Christ prevailed and went ahead to accomplish His mission of saving the demon possessed man.

Brethren, sometimes, forces of darkness come against us and their claws are so tremendous that we are unable to free ourselves on our own. It may be an addiction to a particular sin; it may be an attitude or character we don’t like; it may be a bad temperament we ourselves and others have been praying about; it may be a sickness, serial failure, perpetual lack of progress in life, and chains of disappointments.

The good news however is that, Jesus made that special trip just to go save the demon possessed man, and even when the devil wanted to prevent this, Jesus prevailed. So, we must not give up. Let us still trust and obey. For Jesus would soon make that special trip into our lives to address our helpless situations and nothing would stop Him from coming to our aid. The devil may be wicked enough to thwart our own efforts at helping ourselves. He may succeed in drowning every external assistance to help address our situations. But when Jesus decides to cross the lake and make that special trip to us, just to help us, we shall be set free.

Mark 5:15 says “ a crowd soon gathered around Jesus and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there, fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid” This week, and sooner than later, may God Himself intervene in whatever helpless situation in which we find ourselves, and may we suddenly be normal such that others who witness this mighty divine intervention, would develop a certain holy fear for God, through Christ Jesus, amen.
