Daniel Axim, the former chief operating officer of MASLOC, was sentenced to five years in prison with hard labor, while Sedinam Tamakloe, the former CEO, was given a ten-year prison sentence.
They were found guilty on 78 charges, which included stealing, money laundering, conspiring to steal, causing financial harm to the state, and breaking regulations pertaining to public procurement.
The state called six witnesses in the trial, which has been going on since 2019.
After leaving the nation for medical treatment, Ms. Tamakloe was tried absentee, and Axim gave a personal testimony without calling any witnesses.
The allegations are related to the theft of money intended for MASLOC operations from 2013 to 2016.
In one case, GH¢500,000 was taken out as a loan for Obaatampa Savings and Loans, and when the organization rejected a 24% interest rate, demands were made for repayment.
Even though there existed proof of repayment, MASLOC’s finances did not disclose it.
Additionally, they were found guilty of embezzling more than 1.7 million Ghanaian cedis intended for a sensitization campaign, of which only a small portion reached the intended recipients.
In a another instance, money intended to aid fire victims was not entirely distributed; instead, a sizeable amount was taken by the defendants.
Furthermore, even though the cars and Samsung phones were purchased in large quantities, MASLOC had to pay more than the going rate for them.
The findings revealed differences between the amounts paid out and the going rates for the market.
