The Kumasi International Airport is scheduled to open and begin operations in June of this year, according to Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah.
He further claimed that the airport’s opening to traffic would relieve some of the load on northern travelers who must travel to Accra for their international flights.
According to the Ghana Airport Company, 800,000 passengers are anticipated to use the new facility each year.
“We should start operationalizing this terminal by the end of June,” Mr. Asiamah stated in an interview with JoyNews.
The Transport Minister’s claim is in line with one that the Finance Minister made back in February.
Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam states that the long-stalled Kumasi International Airport project should be finished by April of this year.
He clarified that the government had released a significant portion of the cash required to finish the capital-intensive project to the contractor, allowing construction to resume.
According to the Finance Minister, the government just needs to pay the final two million euros to finish the project, which had been put on hold.
In a week, he promised, the two million euros would be settled.
“This project would have been completed sometime ago but for the problem that we faced. Having said that, we have made renewed efforts to address those challenges.
“Part of the outstanding amount of money which was to be paid for work to resume has been paid to the contractor,” the Finance Minister said when he visited the airport.
“What is left is about just two million euros which we are going to pay within one week so that the contractor would have no excuse as far as funding is concerned, to work to bring the project to completion.”
Dr. Amin Adam, who sounded positive, said, “I’m impressing upon them to make sure by April 2024 they bring their work to a closure so we can use the airport.” he said.
He believed that the completion of the Kumasi International Airport project will significantly enhance both air travel and people’s quality of life.
In order for the project to be finished and available for public use within the next two months, the Finance Minister repeated his request that the contractor move quickly on the job.
