Unexpectedly, the Convention People’s Party (CPP) has applied for an interlocutory injunction against the Electoral Commission (EC) in an attempt to put an end to the April 30 Ejisu by-election.

By taking this action, the CPP hopes to postpone the by-election until the Electoral Commission complaint is settled.

The CPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Emmanuel Gallo, filed the case, which claims the party officially informed the Electoral Commission on April 18 that it would not be taking part in the by-election.

The party argues that the Central Committee’s approval, which has not been granted in this case, should come before the Constituency Branch Party Conference chooses a parliamentary candidate for the Ejisu Constituency.

According to the CPP, no one, including Esther Osei, has been legitimately elected in the Ejisu Constituency using the party’s prescribed processes for selecting candidates.

“For the record, no CPP Constituency Branch Conference has been held in Ejisu and no one has been elected as a parliamentary candidate for the said Ejisu Constituency by-election. This is so that the CPP’s Central Committee can review and approve a candidate to be submitted to the Defendant as the CPP’s parliamentary candidate.”

The party is requesting six reliefs, and among them is asking the court to declare

“Central Committee has not considered and approved the said Esther Osei or any other person to contest on the ticket and behalf of the CPP as a political party, regarding the Defendant’s intended Ejisu Constituency by-election.” the party added.

The CPP is suing to get a declaration stating that neither Esther Osei nor any other candidate has received the endorsement of the party’s Central Committee to run in the by-election for the Ejisu Constituency. To hold off on holding the by-election until its demands and claims are resolved, the party is pleading with the High Court.

With this recent development, the CPP intends to stop the election process until its internal party protocols are duly followed, which adds another level of difficulty to the Ejisu by-election.
