According to the Health Minister, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is still debating the suggested required health insurance program for non-resident tourists to Ghana.
According to Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, the cabinet has not yet given its approval.
According to earlier estimates, foreign nationals entering Ghana would have to pay between $45 and $270 for a mandatory health insurance policy before they could enter the country on July 1, 2024.
“The recent announcement regarding a mandatory health insurance policy for non-resident visitors is a proposal from the NHIA and not a government policy.”, Dr. Okoe Boye said in a June 18, 2024, press release,
The Minister emphasized that although the idea has not yet been debated or approved by the cabinet, its goal is to guarantee foreign nationals’ access to healthcare while they are in Ghana.
“We urge the public to disregard any misinformation suggesting that the policy has been finalized and its implementation decided,” Dr Okoe Boye’s statement read.
He also gave the public the assurance that before any policy is put into effect, it will be carefully examined and put through the required procedures to make sure it will benefit the people of Ghana.
