Residents and businesses across parts of the Greater Accra Region and Eastern Region will experience a three-day water supply interruption beginning today as Ghana Water Limited (GWL) carries out major maintenance works on the Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines.
The planned maintenance exercise is expected to end on Saturday, August 8, and will impact thousands of households, institutions, and businesses that depend on the Kpong Water Supply System for their daily water needs.
Ghana Water Limited Shuts Down Kpong Water Treatment Plant
According to Ghana Water Limited, the temporary water outage follows a scheduled shutdown of the Kpong Water Treatment Plant to allow engineers to replace deteriorated sections of the main transmission pipelines.
The company explained that the maintenance project is part of ongoing efforts to modernize water infrastructure, improve operational efficiency, and ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply for consumers in the affected areas.
Routine engineering inspections revealed more than 300 metres of weakened pipeline sections along the 21-inch and 42-inch Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines, making urgent replacement necessary to prevent pipeline failures, reduce water losses, and improve the overall performance of the water distribution system.

To facilitate the repair works, five sections of the transmission pipelines will be isolated, resulting in low water pressure and temporary water supply interruptions in several communities.

GWL Urges Residents to Store Water
Ghana Water Limited has assured customers that its engineers and technical teams will work continuously throughout the maintenance period to complete the repairs on schedule and restore normal water supply as quickly as possible.
The company apologized for the inconvenience and advised residents, businesses, schools, and public institutions in the affected communities to store enough water before the shutdown and use available supplies responsibly during the outage.
Healthcare facilities, hospitals, and other essential service providers have also been encouraged to activate contingency plans to ensure uninterrupted critical services.
Water Tankers to Support Essential Institutions
GWL announced that water tankers will be deployed, where feasible, to supply selected hospitals and other essential institutions during the maintenance exercise.
The utility provider emphasized that the pipeline replacement project is essential to safeguarding one of Ghana’s key water transmission networks. The upgrades are expected to reduce pipeline bursts, minimize emergency water supply interruptions, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen long-term potable water delivery to Tema, the eastern corridor, and surrounding communities.
