Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin has taken a bold step by ordering the parliamentary committee looking into the purported plot to remove Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare to meet again and complete their investigation.
Members of the committee are deeply divided over the final report at this time.
Speaker Bagbin gave a clear directive on Thursday, July 4, 2024: “It is very clear that the committee has not completed the job… I direct that further deliberation of this matter is suspended and the committee is called upon to go back to further consider this matter.”
The committee’s work has been halted by a tense standoff between Vice Chairman James Agalga and Chairman Samuel Atta Akyea, which led to Speaker Bagbin’s order.
The Speaker’s decision attempts to put an end to these internal disputes and guarantee that the accusations against IGP Dampare are thoroughly investigated.
Speaker Bagbin also issued a gag order to all Parliamentarians, preventing them from discussing the probe in public until further notice.
“The ongoing dispute between the Chairman and the Vice Chairman has created an unproductive environment for the House to make an informed decision.” he clarified.
Mr. Atta Akyea justified the investigation’s purview, emphasizing the need to look into all facets of the accusations, particularly those pertaining to extrajudicial killings committed against the IGP.
“Three of the members said the issue of investigating the extrajudicial killing is inconsequential to them; then what are we sitting there for?” he questioned, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive inquiry.”
In its report, the committee discovered instances of professional misconduct among Superintendent Asare, Superintendent Gyebi, and COP George Alex Mensah. All three of whom were mentioned in a contentious audio. The report was turned in on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.
According to the study, two of these people should have their fraudulent evidence sent to the Privileges Committee.
