Several members of the Democracy Hub group have been arrested by the Ghana Police Service for participating in illegal acts during a protest at the 37 Roundabout in Accra.
Numerous people were arrested after demonstrators were accused of disrupting traffic, destroying police barriers, and blocking roadways.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor, one of the protest leaders, is the subject of a manhunt, according to an official statement from the police. The reason for the pursuit is his alleged involvement in “acts of lawlessness” that occurred during the demonstration.
The initial protest was intended to address the nation’s economic difficulties, but it soon became focused on opposing illegal mining, or galamsey.
Social media users have been sharing viral recordings of Mr. Barker-Vormawor robbing a police car of its key and running away.
Police are working harder to capture Mr. Barker-Vormawor after they witness him voluntarily topple police barricades in another video.
“We are actively pursuing those involved in these illegal actions to ensure they face justice,” the statement read.
