The head of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has received a strong warning from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), holding her responsible for any possible danger to Ghana’s democracy.
This coincides with the party’s calls for a voter registration audit in advance of the 2024 elections.
Citing disparities and potential weaknesses, the NDC has expressed its worries loudly about the voter registration.
These worries were brought to light during the party’s “Enough is Enough” protest on September 17. National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah emphasized the necessity of a reliable registration process in order to guarantee free and fair elections.
On TV3’s Hot Issues, Tamale South MP Haruna Iddrisu echoed these views, saying, “We will hold Jean Mensa solely responsible should anything happen to Ghana’s democracy.”
He urged the Chair of the European Commission to put openness first and warned her against jeopardizing the nation’s democratic procedures.
Conflicts between the NDC and the EC are not new.
The party challenged the election results in 2020, which prompted a Supreme Court petition.
The NDC’s faith in the election process and the impartiality of the EC are both called into question by the current tensions.
