The current strike action by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has drawn criticism, with some individuals doubting the organization’s motivations.
The University of Ghana’s Students Representative Council (SRC) President-elect, Maradona Yeboah Adjei, has joined the chorus of detractors, claiming that UTAG’s activities are blatantly biased and hypocritical.
Adjei, also known as Guru NKZ, claims that the strike’s timing, occurring just one month before the elections, is questionable. In an interview with Amansan Krakye on Cape Coast’s Property FM, he questioned, “Have UTAG not seen galamsey activities going on in the country for so long, and just a month to elections, they want to go on strike?”
According to Guru NKZ, UTAG’s leadership should have their political party affiliation looked into, as their actions might be motivated more by partisanship than by a sincere concern for the galamsey issue.
“We need to ask and find out what the political party the UTAG president is affiliated to,” he declared.
Some claim that UTAG’s strike action is a politically motivated stunt, while others view it as a daring attempt to solve the issue.
Students at the University of Ghana have also responded to the proposed strike, with some voicing worries about how it will affect their academic schedules.
Some have questioned if the strike will actually solve the galamsey problem.
