The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has launched the National Horticultural Seed Roadmap as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s horticultural seed industry and improve farmers’ access to quality seeds and seedlings.
The roadmap was officially launched in Accra on Thursday, September 17, 2026, and provides a strategic framework for developing Ghana’s horticultural seed sector over the next three to five years.
The initiative is expected to improve the availability, accessibility and adoption of improved planting materials that are suitable for Ghana’s local farming conditions.
Government Outlines Key Priorities
Speaking at the launch, the Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Setor Dumelo, described the roadmap as an important step towards creating a stronger, more efficient and responsive seed system for Ghana’s agricultural sector.
Implementation of the National Horticultural Seed Roadmap will focus on several key areas, including:
- Strengthening local seed production and horticultural seed enterprises.
- Improving farmers’ access to quality seeds and seedlings.
- Supporting the development of crop varieties adapted to Ghanaian conditions.
- Establishing clear implementation responsibilities and timelines.
- Developing sustainable financing arrangements for the seed sector.
The government expects the strategy to contribute to increased agricultural productivity by ensuring that farmers have access to reliable and improved planting materials.
Netherlands Supports Ghana’s Horticulture Sector
The Embassy of the Netherlands also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the development of Ghana’s horticultural seed industry.
Representing the embassy at the launch, Inge Tenniglo described the roadmap as laying the foundation for the future development of Ghana’s horticulture sector.
The partnership is expected to support efforts to improve seed systems, promote innovation and strengthen opportunities for farmers and businesses operating within Ghana’s horticultural value chain.
Stakeholders Join Horticultural Seed Roadmap Launch
The launch brought together key stakeholders from Ghana’s agriculture sector, including government officials, seed producers, research institutions, farmer organisations, development partners and other industry representatives.
The National Horticultural Seed Roadmap is expected to provide a coordinated approach to addressing challenges within Ghana’s seed industry while promoting the production and use of high-quality horticultural seeds and seedlings.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s agricultural value chain, improve farm productivity and support sustainable growth in the horticulture and agribusiness sectors.
