The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, is being prevented from making a decision on an application that the Minority caucus has submitted by the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin.

The lawsuit was filed before the Supreme Court.

As per the Majority Leader’s statement, his attorneys have commenced legal actions, requesting an injunction to prevent the Speaker from making a decision.

He said, “I want to seek the proper interpretation of Constitutional Article 97.”

At a press conference hosted by the Parliamentary Media Relations Department, Hon. Afenyo-Markin stated as much.

Each parliamentary meeting begins with a “Leaders’ Briefing,” where the media is given a rundown of the topics that will be covered on the House floor.

The Fifth Meeting of the Fourth Session of Parliament convened on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, was deemed significant by the Majority Leader.

He emphasized how important it is for the media to close the communication gap between the public and Parliament, particularly as the elections of 2024 approach.

He declared,  “Your role as media professionals is central in ensuring effective communication between Parliament and citizens.”

The necessity for a better run and more effective legislative session was emphasized by Hon. Afenyo-Markin, particularly in light of the upcoming elections.

In order to speed the processing of non-controversial measures and enable Members of Parliament to manage their time between constituency work and parliamentary responsibilities, he laid out proposals to add special decision days.

The Deputy Clerk in charge of Information Management Services (IMS), Dr. Gloria Sarku-Kumawu, spoke on behalf of the Clerk of Parliament and said the briefing was an essential step in making sure the public is educated about the legislative processes that affect their daily life.

She said that Parliament is looking forward to a fruitful session and the media’s ongoing collaboration.
