The Black Stars of Ghana did not make it to the AFCON 2025.

Ghana cannot advance to the finals even though there is still a full round of qualification matches left after Group F leaders Angola held Otto Addo’s squad to a 1-1 draw on Friday.

In Luanda, Angola, Jordan Ayew of Leicester City gave Ghana the lead in the 18th minute, but Zini of the home team equalized in the 63rd.

South Sudan, who have never before made it to a major football tournament as an independent country or as Sudan, is still three points ahead of Niger in the remaining qualification pot ahead of matchday six. Angola has now qualified for the AFCON, which will take place between December 2025 and January 2026.

The Black Stars have only managed two goals in their first five group qualifying games, earning just three points, four from South Sudan and one behind third-place Niger.

Addo’s team lost 0-1 at home to Angola to start the campaign. They then drew 1-1 with Niger and 0-0 with South Sudan before losing 2-0 in South Sudan on matchday four.

AFCON champions four times Ghana participated in all ten of the most recent iterations of the continental championship, however in 2021 and 2023, they were eliminated at the group round.

Ghana finished second in the competition in 2015 and made it to the semi-finals two years later, but in the three tournaments following, they have not made it past the round of 16.

The next tournament will be held in Morocco and will start on December 21, 2025, and end on January 18, 2026.
