The House will be recalled for an urgent session on Monday, December 16, 2024, at 10 a.m., according to Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin. The location will be revealed later.

The Speaker justified the recall in a statement released on Monday, December 2, 2024, citing Order 58 of the Ghanaian Parliament’s Standing Orders.

“Pursuant to Order 58 of the Standing Orders of the Parliament Of Ghana, I, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker Of Parliament, hereby give notice that the seventh meeting of the Fourth Session Of The Eighth Parliament Of The Fourth Republic shall commence on Monday, the 16th day of December, 2024, at ten o’clock in the forenoon at a place to be appointed by the Speaker in due course.” the statement read.

The action, which comes only weeks before the Fourth Republic’s ninth Parliament is sworn in, emphasizes how urgent it is to address important national issues before the year closes.

The recall comes after Speaker Bagbin turned down a request for an earlier meeting from the majority in Parliament on Tuesday, November 26, 2024.

Speaker Bagbin responded to the Majority by saying that Parliament would reconvene following the general elections to concentrate on important issues, guaranteeing a seamless transition to the new Parliament.

He urged MPs to put the interests of the country first and emphasized the need of civility in parliamentary procedures.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus supported Speaker Bagbin’s previous position, claiming that the Majority’s earlier recall request was unwarranted and ill-timed.
