Official results from the Electoral Commission (EC) show that in the just concluded general election of 2024, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won all 11 constituency seats in the Upper West Region.
The victory indicates that the NDC’s legislative candidates were able to depose the New Patriotic Party of Nandom’s incumbent Members of Parliament in the Lambussie and Sissala East Constituencies, which were elected in 2020.
A two-time NDC candidate, Mr. Richard Kuuire, ousted the former Interior Minister and Nandom MP.
The NDC opponent, Mr. Mohammed Bataglia, denied Deputy Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources Mr. Amidu Chinnia a second term after he was elected to parliament in 2020.
All of the NDC’s incumbent parliamentary candidates essentially kept their seats.
The region’s two female parliamentary candidates, who ran on the NPP platform, were denied the opportunity to represent their constituents in parliament due to the resounding victory.
The incumbents, Mr. Cletus Seidu Dapilah of Jirapa and Dr. Hassan Rashid Pelpuo of Wa Central, were not defeated by Hajia Humu Awudu and Hajia Ayisha Salifu, who ran on the NPP platform in the Wa Central and Jirapa Constituencies, respectively.
With a margin of 2,427 votes, the NPP candidate for the Daffiama-Busie-Issa Constituency in the most recent election gave incumbent Dr. Sebastian Sandaare a serious challenge, but he was unable to win the election as many had predicted.
In terms of the presidential score, former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s presidential candidate, defeated Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s, by receiving 50,354 of the valid votes cast, compared to Dr. Bawumia’s 17,753 total.
At the Danpuoripaala Centre Limanyiri polling station B, a group of journalists covering the 2024 elections in Wa in the Wa Central Constituency were attacked by unidentified assailants when they tried to record a scene of confusion that broke out at the polling place.
Throughout the voting process, security guards were stationed at each polling place.
