Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the Member of Parliament for Agona West Constituency, has finally been shown the door by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after refusing to bow to the party leadership and rather, deciding to run as an independent candidate.
In the statement signed by Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, the Constituency Chairman for Agona West, the party’s action was as a result of his infractions of party rules.
According to a statement issued on December 16, 2024, the decision was communicated after a meeting of the Expanded Constituency Executive Committee on December 15, 2024, at which the decision was unanimously adopted.
Banned from the expelled include Hon. Morrison and indefinitely from:
- Representing themselves as members of the NPP,
- Holding any positions within the party,
- Participating in party meetings or activities, and
- Using party symbols or flags.
The NPP leadership said the expulsion was based a number of infractions, which included:
- Standing as independent candidates against the NPP’s officially elected parliamentary candidate,
- Declaring support for other political parties,
- Backing independent candidates during the December 7 parliamentary elections, and
- Engaging in conduct deemed detrimental to the party’s interests.
This was at the Expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting, which had in attendance the Municipal Chief Executive, constituency founding members, the council of elders and patrons and electoral area coordinators.
The decision is in accordance with Article 3(9)(1) of the NPP Constitution, which empowers the party the right to expel members who violate party rules, the party said. This had been submitted to the Central Regional Chairman and with the media.
After losing the party’s primary, which caused a great deal of controversy in the constituency, Hon. Morrison decided to run as an independent.
