Otto Addo will continue to coach the Black Stars, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed, even if the squad did not make it to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
GFA Executive Council member Dr. Randy Abbey reaffirmed this decision, stressing the association’s dedication to Addo’s leadership as they prepare for upcoming tournaments.
Challenges have plagued Otto Addo’s term; he oversaw six AFCON qualification matches without a single victory, which caused Ghana to miss the tournament for the first time in twenty years.
Fans and commentators have expressed unhappiness with this result and questioned the national team’s direction under Addo.
Supporters were informed by Dr. Abbey, who also serves as the chair of the Black Stars Management Committee, that the GFA is not currently exploring a head coach change. The emphasis will instead be on restructuring Addo’s backroom staff, with major changes anticipated as goalie coach Fatau Dauda, assistant coaches John Paintsil, and Joseph Lauman might all be fired.
“We think the GFA has made its decision already. The GFA is keeping Otto Addo. Immediately, it’s about the World Cup qualifiers that start in March, and to ensure that the poor trend of results that led to non-qualification for AFCON, we would be able to change course and put the Black Stars back on the winning path,” Dr. Abbey said on Original FM.
The GFA made the choice to keep Addo on board as they get ready for the World Cup qualifying tournament, which is scheduled to start in March. As the immediate objective is to make sure the team is adequately prepared for their matches against Chad and Madagascar, Abbey said the association feels this continuity would enable the team reverse their recent bad performance and return the Black Stars to their winning ways.
Otto Addo’s three-year contract, which has a two-year extension option, will remain in effect.
The Black Stars will concentrate on strengthening their team dynamic and enhancing their on-field performance as they prepare for their next challenges.
