The people of Ghana have been reassured by President John Dramani Mahama that he will fulfill his pledge to revoke all mining leases granted by the previous administration in forest reserves.
In addition, all forest reserves will not be allowed to issue mining licenses, according to the administration.
This was revealed on January 30, 2025, when he swore in a few of his ministers to the presidency.
The president refuted allegations that certain members of his administration had granted a trio permission to mine in the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve.
“The government will ban the issuance of mining leases in all forest reserves and promptly revoke all leases issued under the previous government.”
“The government has not given any person or group of persons authority to mine in these reserves,” the president stated.
He gave the Interior Minister, the Attorney General, and the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources instructions to coordinate so that prompt action is taken to apprehend and prosecute anyone discovered mining in the forest.
