Daniel McKorley, also known as McDan, the CEO of the McDan Group of Companies, has stated his desire to make investments in Ghana’s creative industry.
The business tycoon, who is well-known for his investments in other areas of the economy, such as aviation, claims that the abundance of talent in the creative sector is the reason behind his choice.
Mr. McKorley commended Ghanaian creatives for their extraordinary creativity and excellent work ethic in an interview with NY DJ on BTM Afrika. However, he pointed out that their limited financial resources frequently make it difficult for them to advance in their careers.
He remarked, citing Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale as examples. “I can tell you that Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy are some of the most talented artists in Africa.”
“None of these Nigerian artists comes close to them, although they are also talented. Their (Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy’s) music and stage performances are amazing.”
Despite their brilliance, none of these Nigerian artists can compare to them. The music and theatrical shows of Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale are incredible.
Daniel McKorley cited the creative economy’s enormous revenue potential when asked why he would want to invest in the field.
“That space brings a lot of money, and I smile where there’s good money, but it’s not my space, so I would want to sit back as the godfather to support (financially, etc.) people to get into that space. You can’t be everywhere. If you’re living in the system, you have to give others a shoulder,” he further noted.
Since artists and other creatives are excellent representatives of the nation, he also urged other businesspeople to invest in the creative industry.
“I believe in my heart that they need serious support from businessmen. They are our ambassadors, and I feel we need to invest more in them. I’m not really into that space, but I can see some good young upcoming talents as well,” he added.
Ghanaian transdisciplinary artist George Quaye was given a $2 million contract by Daniel McKorley in 2022.
He revealed this information at the McDan Youth Connect event, which took place at the KNUST in Kumasi on August 11, 2022.
McDan mentioned George Quaye as one of the individuals who had achieved remarkable success in his area, while urging the young people to strive for greatness and learn to progress by taking small measures.
“I’m here with Aboagye. Aboagye, whom you saw in ‘Taxi Driver,’ just won a contract from me—about two million dollars. You saw him in ‘Taxi Driver’ like he was joking [in ‘Taxi Driver], but Aboagye had a purpose. Today, he is sitting here in a suit. Everybody has something special in him,” he noted.
George Quaye, who is also the Team Lead for ImageBureau, has been active in the theater industry in recent years.
In an effort to support theater projects in Ghana, he and his companion, Naa Ashorkor, have put on several outstanding shows.
