After 11 months of unpaid national service allowances, Ghanaian rotational nurses and midwives have expressed their anguish and despair.

Despite numerous meetings with the Ministry of Health and the previous administration, the matter has not been resolved, according to Mavis Akoto Frimpong, secretary of the Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association (RNMA).

She described the situation as terrible and unsustainable and fervently urged President John Dramani Mahama and the present Health Minister to act immediately.

“We have done everything necessary to get our allowances paid, but to no avail.”

“For nearly a year, we’ve worked tirelessly in hospitals and health facilities across the country without any financial support. It’s unfair and discouraging,” she lamented.

“Some of us are unable to afford transportation to work. We can’t feed ourselves properly, and sadly, even our parents have given up on us because they are overwhelmed,” she added.

Mavis further urged relevant authorities and stakeholders to support them, emphasizing that many of her coworkers are fighting for their lives as their 12-month mandated national service draws to a close.

The RNMA is urging immediate action on the issue, highlighting how the ongoing disregard for rotational nurses and midwives may discourage aspiring medical professionals and lower the standard of healthcare provided nationwide.
