On July 1, which is customarily observed as Republic Day, President John Dramani Mahama formally declared it to be Ghana’s National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.

At a ceremony held at the Presidency on April 25, 2025, a 34-member planning committee was established to supervise the first observance’s preparations.

President Mahama stressed in his speech the value of harmony and introspection for the advancement of the country.

He emphasized the positive aspects of Ghana’s religious plurality, saying, “One of Ghana’s greatest blessings is the harmony with which we practice our diverse faiths. Christians, Muslims, and traditionalists—we worship differently but work together as one people. This is a national treasure that we must never take for granted.”

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, the President emphasized, fulfills a pledge he made during his 2024 campaign to establish a day for group spiritual reflection.

He urged Ghanaians to seek divine guidance for the country’s advancement and urged all Ghanaians, both domestically and outside, to take part in the observance.

The planning committee’s newly appointed chairman, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, thanked the group for their confidence.

He reassured the country that they would organize a meaningful and inclusive event, saying, “We will consult broadly, engage inclusively, and bring everybody on board from every region, every faith, and every background because the national day of thanksgiving belongs to all of us.”
