Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, convened a strategic discussion with hospital superintendents, medical directors, and executives of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) to discuss the main issues facing the country’s healthcare sector.

The meeting’s main topics were expanding issues such as the increase in medical-legal cases, which place a strain on public money and jeopardize the standing of healthcare facilities.

Citing ongoing audit violations as proof of systemic accountability shortcomings, Hon. Akandoh demanded greater financial restraint and complete adherence to procurement laws.

The Minister claims that unchecked casual employee hiring is depleting Internally Generated Funds (IGF) at the facility level, jeopardizing both financial sustainability and service delivery.

The Minister addressed operational inefficiencies by saying that frequent equipment failures and maintenance delays are indicators of bad management practices rather than just resource problems.

He demanded more stringent control and a move toward maintenance.

Hon. Akandoh also expressed concern about the ongoing shortages of medical supplies and consumables, which have an effect on the standard of care. He gave stakeholders his word that supply chain management will continue to be improved through changes.

He also emphasized that future health projects will give priority to deficiencies in Ghana’s health system, specifically the absence of effective emergency services and the lack of suitable infrastructure that is accessible to people with disabilities.

The Ministry’s dedication to proactive stakeholder involvement in policy change and system development was reaffirmed by the Minister, who also recognized the vital role that frontline health workers and administrators play in maintaining public health.
