At a Special General Assembly Meeting on Tuesday at Accra City Hall, members of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) overwhelmingly endorsed Michael Kpakpo Allotey as the new Chief Executive.

Mr. Allotey exceeded the two-thirds majority necessary by Section 20 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) by obtaining all 30 valid votes cast, or 100% of the vote, to win an election held by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Prior to the vote, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister who oversaw the voting process, issued a statement urging Assembly members to fulfill their constitutional duty by endorsing the President’s choice for the post of Metropolitan Chief Executive (Mayor).

She emphasized the strategic significance of AMA, calling it “the center of Greater Accra,” and advised the members to avoid letting politics stand in the way of advancement.

Mr. Allotey thanked God Almighty and conveyed his sincere gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for his appointment as Mayor in his acceptance speech.

“I thank the President for entrusting me, a young man from North Kaneshie, with this responsibility. It is an honour I do not take lightly,” he said.

“I now hold the baton as Mayor of Accra. My predecessor has done her part, but today, it’s my turn. If I have any misunderstandings, I can seek advice from the many who have come before me, so there is no window for failure,” he affirmed.

The incoming mayor acknowledged the efforts of his predecessors and promised to build on their accomplishments while utilizing their expertise.

The new mayor emphasized that “what God cannot do does not exist” and declared, “We are going to reset Accra—starting now,” citing the president’s goal.

Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, the Economic and Social Development Committee Chairman and Council of State representative for Greater Accra, was in attendance and urged Mr. Allotey to exercise bold and visionary leadership in addressing the city’s urgent issues, including housing, urban congestion, sanitation, youth unemployment, and social equity, with creativity and integrity.

“Leadership of this nature demands not only strategic foresight but also empathy and discipline,” he said.

With more than ten years of experience in the real estate, oil, and transportation industries, Mr. Allotey is a seasoned businessman, logistics specialist, and development-minded politician.

As the CEO of Our God Is Good Real Estate prior to his appointment, Mr. Allotey, a supporter of public-private partnerships, made a substantial contribution to infrastructure development and employment creation.

Other leadership roles he had included Transport Manager at DIMD Ghana, General Manager at KYG Consultancy and Lubricants, and EXOLUBE Company Ltd., where he implemented logistics changes that improved operational effectiveness and cut expenses.

In addition, Mr. Allotey held other leadership positions within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and was the Director of Operations for the Okaikwei South Constituency.

Assembly Members, government officials, traditional leaders, party executives, and locals were among those who attended the confirmation ceremony, which was held amid drumming and celebration.
