To improve pedestrian safety, restore order, and advance environmental cleaning, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has reinstated its “red line policy,” which governs selling on specific pavements around the city.
On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the mayor of Accra, marked off specific pavements with red boundary lines.
Speaking to hawkers and the media, the mayor emphasized that the need for justice, equity, and a personal dedication to responsible leadership served as the inspiration for the policy.
Hon. Allotey clarified that the exercise, which started the day before, would be maintained through a number of initiatives under the government’s 24-hour economy agenda, such as the hiring of young people from the area to assist AMA’s enforcement task force and the implementation of a new rotating trading system that would permit traders to sell for longer hours on specific days.
