Dr. Clement Apaak, the MP for Builsa South, has questioned how the government can authorize 2.5 million Ghana cedis for planting trees when school lunch caterers remain on strike.

This follows the government’s approval of an enormous sum of Gh2.5 million for the 2023 Green Ghana tree planting program.

Benito Owusu-Bio, deputy minister of lands and natural resources, revealed this at a news conference in advance of the 2023 Green Ghana Day event.

The Builsa South politician commented on the news, saying that while planting trees is beneficial, Ghanaian children are as crucial. “School meal caterers are on strike because the government owes them money.

The current daily rate per child is 97p, which is insufficient to feed a pet cat. In spite of this, the government can find 2.5 million to plant trees? Trees are vital, yes, but, Mr. President, our children are more important.

The Forestry Commission will offer three million seedlings, according to the deputy minister, through its district offices and internal nursery.

“It will also help with 500,000 seedlings and 1 million seedlings from certain devoted benefactors. These will all make up up to 7.5 million of the 10 million.

“As of right now, we have a GH2.5 million allocated budget for the Green Ghana. Even though this is insufficient, we nonetheless must declare that we will observe the day this year. As a result, we have been making financial appeals since last year and are hoping to receive some assistance from our partners to make this happen.
