The Nzema East Municipal Security Council Taskforce has detained twenty illegal miners in the Nzema East municipality of the Western Region.
The Ghana Police Service’s Axim Divisional Command, the National Investigation Bureau (NIB), and the Blue Water Guard squad collaborated to arrest the unlicensed miners on Saturday. The Nzema East Municipal Assembly was the only sponsor of the operation.
Under the direction of Mr. Herbert Kuah Dickson, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), the operations focused on regions near the River Ankobra, including Akango, Abelebo, and Duale.
During the operation, the combined operations team confiscated 35 chamfan equipment, dredge boats, and six excavator control boards. Other miners’ belongings were also destroyed.
Following the operation, Mr. Dickson cautioned those involved in the illegal activities in the area, such as the destruction of the forest and water bodies, to refrain from doing so since the assembly is prepared to crack down on them at an unexpected time.
Additionally, he advised community chiefs and opinion leaders who had ceded their properties for such activities to refrain from doing so, particularly in deep forest areas and near riverbanks.
