Kevin Ekow Taylor, a Ghanaian social media commentator based in the United States, had an arrest warrant revoked by the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court ruled in a 4:1 majority ruling on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, in Accra that the procedure violated natural justice principles and denied him the opportunity to be heard.
The court invalidated the bench warrant in a 4-1 majority ruling, citing the lack of due process.
As the majority, Justices Senyo Dzamefe, Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, and Philip Bright Mensah joined the presider, Justice Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu.
Ernest Yao Gaewu, a justice, dissented.
In January 2020, the High Court in Accra, which was chaired by Justice Eric Kyei Baffour, issued the arrest warrant in a case involving contempt.
Taylor was cited for remarks he made on social media about a matter that was still proceeding in court that were considered insulting to the legal system.
The warrant was valid until the Supreme Court’s ruling on Tuesday morning, even though he was never taken into custody.
The decision to revoke the arrest warrant essentially ends a five-year court dispute that began when Taylor made comments about a case that Justice Kyei Baffour was presiding over.
