As part of Ghana’s mission to the ECOWAS Parliament, Parliament has decided to replace Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin with Patricia Appiagyei, his deputy.

Deputy Majority Leader George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan is anticipated to succeed Afenyo-Markin, who also held the position of Third Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament.

During the Sixth Session of the ECOWAS Parliament, the MP representing the Effutu constituency served as the deputy speaker.

For a while now, Afenyo-Markin has been a prominent member of the ECOWAS Parliament.

For the past two years or so, he has served as the chairman of its Food and Agriculture Committee.

Dominic Nitiwul, the Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, has been particularly critical of the reshuffle, accusing the Majority Caucus of acting without consulting the Minority and making unilateral changes.

“The leadership should not be moving motions and asking the house to make decisions that they should be taking and bringing to us.”

“I know it is the decision of the house to do it, but it is not for Parliament, because the majority has a majority, to force the decision of the majority on the minority about representation,” Mr. Nitiwul said.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga responded by defending the choice, pointing out that it is consistent with parliamentary custom, which normally designates Deputy Leaders of the House with ECOWAS parliamentary responsibilities.

One of ECOWAS’s institutions is the ECOWAS Parliament, sometimes referred to as the Community Parliament.

It is the Assembly of Peoples of the Community, which provides representatives of the West African people with a place for discussion, consensus-building, and consultation in order to advance integration.
