The by-election in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region will take place on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, according to the Electoral Commission of Ghana. This comes after the unexpected death of Mr. Ernest Kumi, a member of parliament.
The Commission confirmed that the Akwatia parliamentary seat is now legally empty in accordance with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution in a press release that was signed by Chairperson Jean Mensa.
To fill the vacancy left by the deceased MP, a by-election is under way.
From Monday, August 11, 2025, through Wednesday, August 13, 2025, the Commission has set aside time in the Denkyembour District Office for the submission of nominations.
On each day, submissions will be accepted from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
From July 30 to August 13, interested candidates must download nomination forms from the EC’s official website (www.ec.gov.gh).
In addition to 18 other registered voters from the constituency who support the nomination, two proposers and seconders must sign each form.
Candidates need to send in:
Completed nomination forms in quadruplicate
Two recent passport-sized photographs with a red background
A filing fee of GHS 10,000.00
Persons with disabilities (PWDs) and female candidates, however, will pay a discounted price of GHS 7,500.00.
The Commission states that nomination forms may be sent to the Returning Officer at the assigned district office directly by the candidate or via the proposer or seconder.
The public and all parties involved have been urged by the Electoral Commission to pay close attention to the deadlines and protocols and to make sure that they are strictly followed.
