More than 16 acres of prime airport land have been successfully reclaimed by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) after the Accra High Court ruled in favor of GACL against McDan Group subsidiaries.
GACL was given complete possession of two plots of land, around 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres, located close to Kotoka International Airport, across from Action Chapel International, as a result of the court’s May 6, 2025, ruling.
Since 2012, the McDan Group’s McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited have been leasing the land that belonged to Ghana Airports Company.
Citing many violations of the lease terms and unpaid ground rent, GACL filed a lawsuit in February 2025.
In addition to a permanent injunction to prevent the corporations from interfering with the land in the future, the company requested the recovery of $26,296 in arrears.
The High Court decided that the defendants’ defense was inadmissible and granted a summary judgment. The court ordered the payment of GH¢50,000 in legal expenses and affirmed all of GACL’s reliefs.
GACL praised the work of its Legal Department and Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, in a statement, characterizing the decision as a major recovery of state property.
“The repossession of these lands not only safeguards millions of dollars in state assets but also reinforces our commitment to accountability and the lawful management of public property,” the company said.
This land recovery comes after a similar situation in December 2024, when unpaid payments forced McDan Aviation to halt operations at Kotoka International Airport’s Terminal 1.
Even though those responsibilities were eventually resolved, the land issue persisted until the most recent court ruling.
