The black box from the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter that crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District on Wednesday, August 6, killing a number of senior military and government personnel, has been recovered, according to Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene.

A team of investigators has successfully identified the black box at the accident site, a critical step in determining the reason for the unfortunate tragedy, according to a Facebook post made by Dr. Amoakohene on Thursday, August 7.

The crew started the mission early Thursday morning and was composed of officers from various military forces, including the Ghana Air Force. They were accompanied by locals and the Assembly Member for the region, who led them to the accident site through the wooded area.

The Minister of Defense, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammad, were killed in the crash, which was dubbed one of the most catastrophic aviation disasters in recent Ghanaian history.

Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former Parliamentary Candidate Samuel Aboagye, and NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong were among the other individuals who died in the incident.

Additionally, Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala perished.

According to early accounts, when the chopper fell off radar, it was headed to Obuasi. Military and local officials responded quickly and conducted a search.

Investigators are rushing to put together the sequence of events that led to the deadly disaster, and the discovery of the black box is anticipated to give them vital information.

To help with their identification, samples of the remains of the eight people who died have been transported to South Africa for DNA analysis.
