The Roof Top Garden of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has been praised by Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sayerr, the mayor of Freetown, Sierra Leone, and co-chair of C40 Cities, as a brilliant example of sustainable urban innovation that promotes environmental stewardship and municipal resilience.

She claims that the garden’s creative design and abundant vegetation reminded her of other climate-friendly initiatives in her city, leaving her in awe of the initiative’s ingenuity and ambition.

As part of her brief visit to Ghana for the African Government Conference, she made the comments Thursday during a tour of the garden when she met with Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the mayor of Accra.

The Amamomo Youth Group is implementing the “Green Above the Skies of Accra” rooftop garden, which is situated atop Accra City Hall (AMA Head Office), as part of the Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF) Phase II.

By converting underutilized rooftop space into a flourishing green farm, the initiative aims to address the increasing effects of climate change on urban surroundings while advancing urban agriculture, biodiversity, and sustainable living.

Along with some decorative plants, the garden’s manually irrigated and solar-powered automated farming sections grow crops like pepper, lettuce, and cabbage.

Additionally, it features flower pots made from recycled plastic waste, a rest space for young volunteers, and ornamental signage created from recycled plastic and textiles, such as one that reads “Bloomberg Philanthropies,” the organization that funds the YCAF program.

With a strong sense of nostalgia, the mayor of Freetown expressed her amazement and joy at the AMA rooftop’s conversion into a climate-smart, productive area. She also said that such projects were a potent example of African cities’ inventiveness and dedication to tackling environmental issues.

She also discussed how her vision as co-chair of a climate effort led to the establishment of financial options for cities, which began with $50,000 for each participating city and then expanded to $100,000. She also talked about her love for youth empowerment.

According to her, “When you say what’s on your mind, sometimes the person who’s listening is in a position to do something about it.”

The mayor of Freetown commended Accra as a thriving city with enormous potential and said he trusted Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey’s leadership to lead it to new heights.

In order to address common urban issues, Mayor Allotey reiterated Accra’s dedication to youth development, climate action, and deeper cooperation with other African cities.
