A terrible boat accident on the Volta Lake in the East Gonja District has claimed nine lives.
The event happened on the Yeji–Congo route between Sikakope and Mataiko on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Rough weather is said to have caused the 14-person boat to capsize.
Women and children were among the victims, while five male passengers were saved.
Savannah Regional Minister Salisu Be-Awuribe told Joy News that authorities are organising assistance for the impacted households.
“We’ve directed the district NADMO officers to quickly move to the site and see what other packages are available to give to them.”
“We are also mobilising resources to assist the families affected, but it is unfortunate that we lost nine patriots’ lives,” he reiterated.
