Police have detained a 35-year-old man who allegedly staged a robbery and kidnapping in Fijai, a Millennium City suburb close to Kasoa in the Central Region.
He allegedly made a last-ditch effort to hide his misappropriation of employer monies.
He was initially being regarded as a victim after the police identified him as Benjamin Owusu, but he became a suspect after suspicions were aroused by discrepancies in his account of the staged crime.
He is now at the Central East Regional Police Command after being arrested on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, for reporting a fictitious robbery and kidnapping event.
Following his arrest, he allegedly informed the police that he was unable to account for the money that was in his hands that belonged to his employer, so he planned the kidnapping and robbery to conceal the money’s theft.
According to reports, he reported being the victim of a robbery attack at his home to the police on September 3, 2025, at approximately three in the morning.
Police attended the alleged crime location, which was the home of suspect Benjamin Owusu, after receiving the allegation, but they were unable to locate him.
However, police discovered bloodstains on his bedroom floor, which may indicate that he was hurt.
Blood samples were taken from his room’s floor for forensic examination, but the police claim that following a DNA test, the samples from the Police Forensic Crime lab did not contain any human blood.
The guy allegedly admitted to the police that he staged his kidnapping by purposefully killing a duck and smearing the floor of his bedroom with its blood.
He had left behind the SIM card he had previously used to send a text message to the complainant [now suspect] when the police came to his room the morning he reported the crime.
He was able to replace the old Sim card, nevertheless, and on September 5, 2025, he made phone calls from a specified area in the Western Region—Elubo.
On September 24, 2025, police arrested the suspect from his hiding place in Akatamanso, Ashanti Region, based on intelligence about his activities.
He allegedly confessed to the police after being arrested.
According to a police statement, they are getting him ready for legal action.
