Gomoa Central Member of Parliament Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, narrowly escaped an attack by angry residents of New Winneba following a violent clash that has reportedly left three people dead and about 15 others injured.
The MP visited the Effutu North District Police Command on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, to obtain firsthand information about the violent incident. However, his presence at the police facility reportedly angered some residents who had gathered at the scene.
The residents confronted A-Plus, forcing security personnel to intervene and escort the Gomoa Central MP from the area to prevent the situation from escalating.
The Central Regional Police Command, together with additional security personnel, was subsequently deployed to protect the MP and restore calm in the affected community.
New Winneba Violence Leaves Three Dead
According to the Ghana Police Service, the violence started at approximately 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday when about 300 irate residents allegedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks stormed New Winneba Township.
The police said the group was reportedly made up of people from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze.
The attackers allegedly assaulted residents and destroyed properties, including shops, stores and residential buildings belonging to some natives of the community.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed that three people had died, while approximately 15 injured victims were transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical treatment. One of the injured persons was reportedly a police officer.
Gomoa Land Dispute Linked to Deadly Clash
Preliminary information indicates that the violent confrontation may be connected to a land dispute involving communities in the Gomoa area.
Police officers from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to contain the violence and prevent further attacks.
The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, also ordered additional security reinforcement from the National Police Headquarters.
The reinforcement included two armoured vehicles deployed to support the security operation in New Winneba and surrounding communities.
The Ghana Police Service said the additional deployment was aimed at strengthening security, preventing further violence and restoring peace in the affected area.
Seven Suspects Arrested Over New Winneba Attack
The Central Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the New Winneba violence.
Chief Inspector Isaac Entie, Deputy Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, confirmed the arrests and said investigations were ongoing.
According to the police official, investigators are working to identify and arrest other individuals who may have participated in the attack.
The police have assured residents that security personnel remain deployed in the area to maintain law and order and prevent further disturbances.
Although the situation is currently under control, investigations are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the New Winneba clash, the deaths, injuries and destruction of property.
The Ghana Police Service said further details would be released as investigations progress.
