Ridge Hospital, also known as Greater Accra Regional Hospital, has responded to a social media video that went viral and showed an altercation between its emergency ward employees and a party that included a well-known social media activist.

The Ghana Police Service was called in by the hospital administration to restore order after a heated argument, and even the attack of a nurse resulted from claimed delays in treating a seriously injured patient.

The hospital acknowledged that the incident happened while physicians were handling several emergencies in a formal statement from Juliana Hariwa, Head of Public Relations.

According to reports, friends and family of the accident victims “invaded the emergency triage,” causing disruptions that caused services to be temporarily suspended.

According to the statement, “their overwhelming presence caused unnecessary tension, disrupted the smooth delivery of care, and even threatened the safety of our clinicians.”

Additionally, it denounced the staff assault as “unacceptable,” highlighting the fact that such acts “put lives at risk.”

While reaffirming its dedication to “quality and timely healthcare,” Ridge Hospital emphasized the value of privacy and urged the public to refrain from filming in clinical settings without permission.

The statement emphasized the need for “cooperation and mutual respect” to preserve a safe environment for patients and healthcare professionals, even if it did not specifically address the activist’s allegations of carelessness.

Within Ghana’s overworked public health system, this tragedy has sparked a debate about how to strike a compromise between patient rights and medical worker safety.
