Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a private attorney and activist, has declared that his legal practice has managed to gain the release of Frederick Kumi, better known as Abu Trica, a romance scam suspect, and his girlfriend, who is also characterised as the child’s mother.
Barker-Vormawor stated that the woman had been wrongfully held and would now pursue legal action in a tweet on his official X (previously Twitter) account.
He stated, “Our law firm secured the release of Abu Trica’s partner/mother of his son from custody yesterday.”
“We intend to sue the Narcotics Control Commission for her unlawful arrest and abuse.”
The trend coincides with increased public awareness after Abu Trica, one of Ghana’s most infamous cyber-fraud suspects, was apprehended.
Frederick Kumi, also known as Emmanuel Kojo Baah Obeng, was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on suspicion of participating in a massive international romance scam that allegedly scammed elderly victims in the US of over $8 million.
The arrest was made on Thursday, December 11, after months of investigations involving numerous local and foreign law enforcement organisations, according to a statement released by EOCO on Friday, December 12, 2025.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), INTERPOL, the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), and the Office of the Attorney General were all involved in the joint operation, according to EOCO.
According to EOCO, the criminal organisation allegedly used advanced AI software to fabricate identities, foster love connections, especially with older victims, and trick them into sending money and valuables under false pretences.
According to EOCO, Abu Trica is anticipated to be extradited to the United States, where he will probably be charged with several offences, such as money-laundering conspiracy, wire fraud conspiracy, and a forfeiture specification.
He might be sentenced to up to 20 years in jail if found guilty.
The anti-graft agency praised its partner institutions, both domestically and abroad, for their collaboration and characterised the arrest as a major turning point in the battle against global cybercrime.
Regarding Barker-Vormawor’s allegations of torture and unlawful arrest of Abu Trica’s companion, neither NACOC nor EOCO have made a formal statement.
