Accra’s mayor praises school meals following unexpected quality inspections at elementary schools.

Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the mayor of Accra, has commended the calibre of the meals provided to students in the city as part of the Ghana School Feeding Program.

In an unannounced visit to the Accra Sempe Primary School, John Wesley Methodist, and Aayalolo Cluster of Schools, the mayor lauded the cuisine, calling it “nice” and “delicious,” after evaluating the quantity sizes and food preparation provided to students.

He added that if he could consume the food, it would also be appropriate for the kids, and that his evaluation was based on personal inspections and tastes.

During his initial visit to the Aayalolo Cluster of Schools, the Mayor engaged with educators who expressed concerns about the lack of a lavatory and a safe school gate. He reassured them that the Assembly will support them in resolving the issues raised.

At John Wesley Methodist School, the mayor praised the caterers for the high calibre of the food after joining the students during the serving time and tasting the food being served.

At Accra Sempe Primary School, the Mayor instructed caterers and kitchen staff that once public funds were paid for school feeding, the meals provided must be wholesome and appetising, as well as for students who had lined up for their meals, encouraging them to enjoy their food, obey their teachers, and take their studies seriously.

In an interview after the inspections, he explained that he had conducted the surprise checks after noticing that government payments to school feeding implementers had improved and wanted to ensure that the monies were translating into quality lunches for students.

According to him, the food was usually satisfactory, and he urged caterers to uphold standards and increase amounts as needed to guarantee that kids are fed appropriately.

In addition to praising the government and the school food team for providing the resources required to maintain the program, the mayor said that the enhanced cash flow was assisting caterers in carrying out their duties.

He revealed that he was confident the initiative was successful in the city because of the favourable comments he received from students and the calibre of the meals they were served.

Regarding the infrastructure issues brought up by the teachers during the visit, the mayor promised to fulfil their demands in order to assist in meeting important requirements such as restrooms, structural repairs, and enhanced security at the school gates.

The monitoring visits, according to the mayor, would assist maintain school feeding standards and guarantee that kids in public basic schools eat healthy, sufficient, and safe meals.
