Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has severely denounced what he calls a “deliberate and disgraceful act of violence” committed against him by a police officer at the Monday, May 5, 2025, “Save the Judiciary” event.

Afenyo-Markin described the incident at Parliament House’s entrance in a statement released on Monday. He claims that a uniformed police officer, Constable Forson, struck him without cause on the left side of his chest, near his heart, using “the full force of his right palm.”

“As the leader of the demonstration, I was guiding protesters, along with other political party leaders, to present our petition to Parliament. While attempting to join other party officials who had already been granted access, I was attacked unprovoked by Constable Forson, who knew exactly who I was,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

The MP claimed that the blow left him speechless, confused, and obviously shaken. He claimed that officers in the vicinity acted swiftly to help him inside a secure location where two CID officers and legislative staff administered first aid.

He took a quick break in a security room, regained his composure, and then returned to the group to deliver the petition.

Afenyo-Markin said, “The professionalism exhibited by officers at the Supreme Court and Jubilee House was commendable, but what happened at Parliament was an unacceptable deviation , an attack that undermines public confidence in our law enforcement.”

According to the minority leader, senior officers’ and party officials’ firsthand reports corroborated the occurrence. Additionally, according to Afenyo-Markin, the constable defied his superiors’ immediate reprimands by allegedly saying, “I don’t care who he is, leader or not.”

According to reports, efforts to find Constable Forson after the altercation were unsuccessful. Afenyo-Markin believes he might have been taken out of the scene to keep him out of the spotlight.

Since then, the congressman has formally complained to the Inspector-General of Police, requesting an immediate inquiry into the officer’s actions. “This shameful incident must be treated with the seriousness it deserves,” he declared.

He also denounced efforts by anonymous people to “twist the narrative” and portray him as the aggressor, saying that such accusations were a diversion from the demonstration’s main point, which was to defend Ghana’s Constitution and judicial independence.

“We must not let the demonstration’s goal be undermined. We peacefully marched in support of democratic principles. “That shouldn’t be tarnished by any officer,” Afenyo-Markin stressed.

The accusations have not yet received an official response from the Ghana Police Service.
