Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been urged by Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, to use the Lenten and Ramadan seasons to consider ways to bolster the main opposition party once more and regain control in the general election of 2028.
In order to rebuild the party for future success, he urged party supporters to set aside their dissatisfaction with the results of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Even though the NPP’s overwhelming setback in the most recent elections was hard to take, Osahen Afenyo-Markin urged party followers to remain optimistic and stressed that hard effort will eventually pay off.
After losing the 2024 election, there seem to be some rifts within the NPP, as complaints are being expressed on social media and traditional media platforms.
Nonetheless, Minority leader Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the widespread displeasure in a social media statement on Friday, the day of Lent, but urged members to maintain their resolve.
Osahen Afenyo-Markin urged both Muslim and Christian members of the main opposition party to use their faith to help them get through this trying moment by encouraging introspection and spirituality.
“As Christians, let’s use this period to reflect. Reflect on our higher selves. Go deep into our inner being. And come out with a new beginning.
The Minority Leader pointed to past examples, including as the 2024 resurgence of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following electoral defeats.
“Our friends in the NDC who are celebrating victory today have been where we are. In 2016, we all recall what happened to them, but they didn’t give up. Today, they have an overwhelming majority in Parliament,” he stressed.
Osahen Afenyo-Markin also brought up the NPP’s own difficulties in 1996, when it only managed to win 61 parliamentary seats but was able to turn things around and win back the majority four years later.
The Minority Leader reiterated that the party’s basis is still solid in spite of the 2024 election’s electoral disaster.
“All we have is the legacy of Akufo-Addo and by extension, the foundation that was laid in the John Kufuor era. These are the combined legacies that as a party we will stand on come 2028,” he stated.
He asked members to criticize the party’s leadership and grassroots supporters with tact.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu in the Central Region, Osahen Afenyo-Markin, issued a warning against public outbursts and internal squabbling, stating that criticisms ought to be handled inside party institutions instead of being broadcast on radio, television, or social media.
Osahen Afenyo-Markin acknowledged members’ worries about the election results and reminded them that the Professor Mike Oquaye committee had been ordered by the National Council to examine the party’s performance.
“Let’s all patiently wait for that day. And when the report comes, we deal with it internally,” he said.
