The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has detained Kofi Akpaloo, the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) leader and presidential candidate, according to family members on Wednesday.

Although his whereabouts are still unknown and the reasons for his incarceration were not immediately apparent, relatives reported that he was removed from his Kumasi house at around 11 a.m.
Regarding the incident, EOCO has not released a statement.

With policies targeted at younger voters, Akpaloo, who stood for president of Ghana in 2024, has established his party as an alternative voice in national politics.

Despite its small size, the LPG has been more well-known in recent years.

The political and legal justifications for Akpaloo’s detention remain unclear as EOCO has not released an official comment on the matter.

The organization usually deals with matters involving organized crime, corruption, and economic crimes.

The arrest occurs weeks after Akpaloo issued a public apology for his divisive remarks made in the wake of the August 6 military chopper tragedy in Adansi Akrofuom that claimed eight lives.

The founder of the Liberal Party has come under fire for comments he made following the tragedy.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Akpaloo apologized for his previous remarks and clarified that his response was driven by his grief over losing a buddy in the collision.

“I am not happy at all, and I feel terrible that my comments caused pain to many people and families. I am sincerely sorry and ask for their forgiveness,” he said in the radio program

The politician clarified that his emotional reaction was influenced by the fact that his buddy, Dr. Omane Boamah, was one of the people killed in the helicopter crash.

According to Akpaloo, his contentious comments were motivated by his annoyance at the frequent deaths in Ghana.

In an effort to put his prior remarks in perspective, he explained, “My reaction came from the pain of knowing that people are dying almost every day in this country, and we seem to have normalized it.”

Concerned about due process and transparency in high-profile detentions involving political people, civil liberties advocates and political analysts will probably keep an eye on Akpaloo’s case.
