The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has started replacing the rusted, stolen, and outdated metal gratings that cover drain openings throughout the city in an effort to improve pedestrian walkway safety and reduce accidents.

Commencing on Sunday, the project is a component of the Mayor of Accra’s larger endeavors to improve urban infrastructure and protect citizens, particularly pedestrians who utilize sidewalks around important roadways and business districts in the nation’s capital.

Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs, stated that a number of locations in the Central Business District and other parts of the city have been classified as high-risk because of missing or damaged drain covers, which present serious risks to the general public.

He revealed that 50 metal gratings would be changed on important roadways, such as Asafoatse Nettey Road, Guggisberg Avenue, and Kojo Thompson Road, among others. He also said that the exercise was still in progress and would be carried out in stages until all danger areas were fixed.

He pointed out that even if the new metal gratings were made to be durable and discourage theft, it was still the duty of the locals and business owners to support the project by safeguarding public property and promptly informing the police of any theft or damage.

He reaffirmed the mayor’s resolve to make the city safer and more resilient, stressing that making investments in fundamental urban infrastructure was essential to attaining sustainable growth and raising citizens’ standards of living.

The exercise was also in line with the government’s inclusive infrastructure goals, which prioritize safe and accessible public spaces for everyone, including the elderly, children, and people with disabilities, according to Mr. Densely Kwesi Humphreys, Resilience and Special Initiatives Advisor at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.
