The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is set to deploy undercover officers to monitor commercial transport fares and crack down on drivers who charge commuters above government-approved rates.

The initiative was announced by the Accra Mayor, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, during a press conference on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. He said the AMA would collaborate with security agencies and other relevant authorities to enforce approved transport fares and protect passengers from unfair charges.

According to Mayor Allotey, undercover personnel will board commercial vehicles as regular passengers to identify drivers who impose unauthorised fares. Drivers found violating the approved fare structure could be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with Ghanaian law.

The monitoring exercise will focus particularly on early morning and peak-hour periods, when passenger demand is high and some commercial drivers are accused of increasing fares without approval.

Mayor Allotey cited cases where commuters who normally pay around GH¢10 for a trip are allegedly being charged as much as GH¢20. The AMA says major transport routes and terminals will be monitored, including Lapaz, Kaneshie, Awoshie, Kasoa, Shiashie, Madina, Nima, Airport Residential Area, Pokuase, Nsawam and Circle, among other busy locations in Accra.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly will also formally engage transport stations and commercial transport operators to communicate the directive and remind drivers that they are required to charge only officially approved fares.

The Mayor appealed to commercial drivers to avoid exploiting passengers and consider the financial pressure arbitrary fare increases place on commuters.

Commuters who encounter unauthorised transport fare increases have been encouraged to report the incidents, providing the vehicle’s registration number, through 0544 916 4628 to support enforcement efforts.

The AMA said the operation forms part of its broader efforts to improve public transport services, protect commuters, promote fair transport fares and maintain discipline within Accra’s commercial transport system.
