Provisional data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) shows that between January and June 2025, more than 1,500 people died and over 8,300 others were injured to varying degrees in traffic accidents nationwide.
There were also reports of 1,301 pedestrians being knocked down nationwide.
According to the mid-year figures, the main causes of these fatalities are speeding, reckless driving, wrongful overtaking, and bad road conditions, highlighting a recurring problem with road safety.
Private automobiles, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles were all involved; a considerable number of the recorded fatalities were caused by motorcycles.
The NRSA report found that major highways and urban areas had the highest crash rates, with weekends and public holidays being especially fatal because of the increased volume of traffic.
The victims also included a significant number of passengers and pedestrians.
Bringing attention to Ghana’s daily traffic incident toll, the road safety official stated,
- 8 lives are lost each day due to road crashes.
- 40 road crashes occur nationwide daily.
- 46 people are injured daily in these accidents, and
- 69 vehicles and motorcycles are involved in road crashes every day.
Road safety experts caution that unless immediate action is taken, the high number of casualties in just six months could indicate a year-end toll that surpasses historical records.
To cut down on avoidable accidents, the NRSA has reaffirmed its demand for stronger enforcement of traffic laws, better road infrastructure, and more public awareness initiatives.
By avoiding unlicensed business vehicles, wearing seatbelts, and obeying speed limits, the public is being urged to put safety first.
Additionally, drivers are urged to notify authorities of careless driving as soon as possible.
The incidents, which range from industrial tragedies to deadly transportation accidents, serve as a reminder of the thin line separating everyday life from unexpected disaster.
