Lawyer Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, a member of parliament for the Northern Region’s Gushegu seat, has provided a historical precedent for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to the congressman, the National Liberation Movement (NLM), the Northern People’s Party (NPP), the Togoland Congress, and the Muslim Action Party were among the political organisations that merged to establish the NPP.

The United Party, often known as the UP tradition, was later founded by these political parties, according to attorney Tampuli.

During Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s visit to his constituency on Sunday, January 11, as part of his tour of the Northern Region in advance of the upcoming January 31 presidential primary, Mr. Tampuli made this claim.

According to the Gushegu Legislator, the Kwame Nkrumah government passed the Avoidance of Discrimination Act, 1957 (No. 38 of 1957) in 1957 to stop organisations from encouraging racial, religious, ethnic, or regional division and from influencing elections on the basis of these affiliations.

“We will not succumb to little minds who are trying to turn the party into an ethnic or religious party. We will fight for the unity of this party to actualise the vision of the founding fathers of this party” he said.

The former Deputy Minister for Transport made these comments in response to alleged remarks made by Kwaku Asante Boateng, the MP for Asante Akim South, who called Dr Bawumia a “stranger” within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and questioned his suitability to lead the party as its flagbearer into the 2028 elections.

As a result, Hon. Tampuli assigned those who are unfamiliar with the NPP’s past to read up on the party.

He went on to say that the NPP will always be an inclusive national party.

“Today, the son of one of the founding fathers of the party is a stranger? Upon all he has done for this party? We have little minds who don’t know the history of this party; go back and read about the history of this party,” he advised.
