The Assemblies of God in Ghana has expressed strong support for former President John Dramani Mahama following Lincoln University’s decision to remove an honorary degree previously granted on him.

The Church stated that the University’s action, purportedly taken in protest of Mr. Mahama’s position on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill presently before Parliament, actually honours the former President and the Church to which he belongs, in a statement released in Accra and signed by the General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Ernest Birikorang.

According to the statement, the development is similar to the biblical story found in Acts 5:41, where the apostles “rejoiced because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name of the Lord.”

Because of what it called Mr. Mahama’s unyielding stance against LGBTQ+ practices, Assemblies of God, Ghana stated that its leadership and members “feel nothing but joy” that one of their own has been deemed “worthy of global disdain.”

The Church remembered that the former president officially declared homosexuality to be “scripturally forbidden, ”morally degrading and culturally unacceptable, a position the Church said has remained “resolute and unshakable.”

Members of Assemblies of God who work in both the public and private sectors are exhorted to follow their example and never compromise their moral or spiritual convictions.

The Church also called on Christians nationwide to intensify prayers for the nation “so that Ghana may avoid the sins of LGBTQ+ and other practices which carry incalculable consequences.”

“God bless our homeland Ghana,” the statement concluded.
