Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the mayor of Accra, and Hon. Alfred Allotey-Gaisie, the municipal chief executive (MCE) of the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA), have spearheaded a significant decongestion and sanitation enforcement operation to get rid of vendors operating near the Fire Service Station and medians at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.

During the work, canopies placed along the medians were removed, along with vendors and unapproved buildings that had taken over the fire station’s frontage and prevented emergency vehicles from accessing it.

The two chief executives also took advantage of the occasion to examine the enclave’s worn-out and malfunctioning traffic signals and reassure drivers and pedestrians that they will be fixed.

During the operation, the Mayor spoke to vendors and advised them to stay off the streets and medians and to strictly adhere to the designated trading areas along the pavement.

He said that actions that jeopardize public safety, obstruct fire department operations, or worsen traffic near one of the busiest crossroads in the city would no longer be accepted by the Assembly.

He reminded out that the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange must remain secure, orderly, and accessible at all times, especially as it serves as a crucial emergency and transportation corridor adding that traders who return to the forbidden areas face possible prosecution.

On the other hand, Hon. Allotey-Gaisie, Chief Executive for KoKMA, cautioned the vendors to maintain basic sanitation as a shared obligation and to keep their surroundings tidy and avoid littering.

He emphasized that only a clean, organized environment free from careless garbage dumping could support sustainable trading activities.

He said that as part of the larger “Reset Accra” plan to uphold cleanliness laws, restore order, and safeguard public infrastructure, such drills would continue throughout the city.
