Monday, August 4, 2025, will not be honored as a formal public holiday, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

The Ministry clarified in a statement released on July 31 that as memorial days are not considered public holidays, there is no reason to halt employment or public activities.

In the past, August 4 was observed as Founder’s Day to commemorate the United Gold Coast Convention’s (UGCC) establishment, which was regarded as a significant turning point in Ghana’s path to independence.

However, in light of recent legislative changes, the designation was reexamined.

A new law voted by Parliament in June 2025 restored September 21, the birthday of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, as Founders’ Day, a national holiday commemorating the country’s fight for independence.

Because August 4 will be observed as a regular working day, the Interior Ministry is advising the public and institutions to take note and make appropriate plans.
