Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu has been named Ghana’s High Commissioner-designate to the Federal Republic of Nigeria by President John Dramani Mahama in an effort to improve diplomatic ties between the two West African countries.
The appointment was formally declared on March 1, 2026.
In his capacity as High Commissioner-designate, Baba Sadiq would advance bilateral cooperation, advance Ghana’s interests in Nigeria, and deepen political, cultural, and economic links between the two nations.
With robust cooperation in commerce, regional security, and ECOWAS projects, Nigeria continues to be one of Ghana’s most significant diplomatic and economic allies in West Africa.
His appointment is contingent upon the conclusion of diplomatic procedures, including the Nigerian government’s consent, prior to his official inauguration in Abuja.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed the new position, praised Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu, and said he was certain he could properly represent Ghana abroad.
He said that Baba Sadiq’s nomination demonstrates the government’s faith in his ability to lead and his dedication to national service.
“Congratulations, Baba Sadiq on your well-deserved appointment by President Mahama as High Commissioner-designate to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I have no doubt you will hold aloft Ghana’s flag and make the youth of our continent proud,” he stated.
The appointment follows weeks after Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, the former High Commissioner, was ordered to be immediately recalled by the President due to charges of voter inducement.
Following his participation in and eventual victory in the National Democratic Congress parliamentary primaries for the Ayawaso East Constituency, Baba Jamal was recalled on February 7, 2026.
Concerns over adherence to diplomatic neutrality and public service behaviour were raised by his active partisan activity while working in a diplomatic role.
