The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Pandit Asiama, has highlighted Ghana’s progress in restoring macroeconomic stability and the growing opportunities to strengthen the country’s domestic debt capital market.

Speaking on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Fidelity Bank’s Debt Capital Market Conference in Accra, Governor Asiama delivered the keynote address, focusing on Ghana’s economic recovery, the government securities market, and the need to build a deeper and more resilient financial market.

According to the Governor, Ghana’s improving economic conditions have helped restore investor confidence in the domestic bond market. He pointed to the reopening of the government securities market, declining Treasury bill yields, and increased participation from institutional investors as signs of renewed confidence.

Three Ways to Strengthen Ghana’s Debt Capital Market

Governor Johnson Pandit Asiama identified three major areas that could help transform and deepen Ghana’s debt capital market:

  1. Diversification of issuers and financial instruments – Expanding the range of market participants and investment products can provide businesses and government with more financing options.
  2. Greater use of technology – Deploying digital technology can improve financial market efficiency, transparency, and accessibility for investors and other market participants.
  3. Mobilising domestic and diaspora savings – More savings from Ghanaians at home and abroad could be channelled into long-term investments to support economic development.

Governor Asiama stressed that the success of Ghana’s debt capital market should ultimately be measured by its impact on the real economy.

He explained that a stronger capital market should help finance infrastructure projects, support industrial expansion, increase housing development, and improve access to capital for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Bank of Ghana Reaffirms Commitment to Financial Stability

The Bank of Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to improving market infrastructure, strengthening investor confidence, and enhancing financial-sector resilience.

Governor Asiama said these efforts are important to creating a stronger financial system capable of supporting sustainable economic growth, long-term investment, and prosperity for Ghanaians.

The developments highlight the growing importance of Ghana’s domestic bond market, government securities, Treasury bills, debt financing, and capital market reforms as the country continues its economic recovery.
